Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) marked a significant milestone today with the formal signing of the Benjamin A. Espiritu, Sr. Endowment Fund for International Law, a meaningful initiative that honors the life, legacy, and scholarly contributions of one of its distinguished alumni.
The endowment stands as a tribute to Atty. Benjamin A. Espiritu, Sr., an alumnus of the MLQU School of Law, whose academic and professional journey reflected both excellence and purpose. After completing his legal education at MLQU, Atty. Espiritu, Sr. pursued advanced studies abroad, earning his Master of Laws (LL.M.) degree from Harvard Law School. He was joined in this academic pursuit by his wife, Atty. Erlinda Arce Espiritu, likewise an alumna of MLQU School of Law, who made history as the first woman to complete the Master’s degree program at Harvard Law School.
Upon their return to the Philippines, Atty. Espiritu, Sr. established a law practice and entered private practice, while remaining deeply committed to the academe. He served as a faculty member at MLQU, where he taught subjects in international law — an area in which he demonstrated both mastery and passion. Beyond the classroom, he contributed extensively to legal scholarship, actively participating in the Law Quarterly Journal and the Quezonian Journal, where he was recognized as a prolific and thoughtful writer.
Tragically, at the height of a promising legal career, Atty. Espiritu, Sr. passed away due to leukemia, leaving behind his wife and their young son, Benjamin A. Espiritu, Jr. Guided by the strength and values instilled by his parents — particularly his mother — Espiritu, Jr. would go on to build a distinguished career in public service, banking, and academia, including serving as Governor of Occidental Mindoro.
The establishment of the Endowment Fund reflects a deep commitment by the Espiritu family to preserve and advance the ideals that defined Atty. Espiritu, Sr.’s life: academic excellence, integrity in the practice of law, and a global perspective grounded in international legal principles.
Through this Endowment, MLQU aims to support initiatives in international law education and research, including scholarships, professorial chairs, faculty development, and student enrichment programs. It is envisioned to serve as a platform for nurturing future lawyers who will engage with global legal issues and contribute meaningfully to both national development and the international legal community.
In his message during the signing ceremony, MLQU Chairman and President Atty. Paquito N. Ochoa, Jr. emphasized the enduring impact of legacy-driven initiatives:
“This Endowment Fund is more than a tribute. it is an investment in the future of legal education. It ensures that the values embodied by Atty. Espiritu, Sr.: scholarship, service, and global engagement will continue to inspire generations of MLQU law students.”
The establishment of the Benjamin A. Espiritu, Sr. Endowment Fund for International Law represents a pivotal step in MLQU’s ongoing transformation into a forward-looking, research-driven institution.
First, it strengthens the academic depth of the MLQU School of Law, particularly in the field of international law, positioning the University to engage more actively in global legal discourse and emerging cross-border issues. This aligns with MLQU’s strategic direction to produce graduates who are not only grounded in Philippine law but are also equipped to operate in an increasingly interconnected legal environment.
Second, the Endowment advances MLQU’s commitment to building a culture of research and publication. By supporting scholarly work, journals, and faculty development, it reinforces the University’s push to elevate its academic output and contribute meaningfully to legal scholarship — consistent with initiatives such as the revival and strengthening of institutional publications.
Third, it contributes to faculty excellence and student opportunity. Through professorial chairs, grants, and scholarships, the Endowment will help attract and retain high-caliber educators while providing deserving students with access to enhanced learning experiences, mentorship, and exposure to international legal frameworks.
Fourth, the Endowment serves as a model for sustainable academic funding and alumni engagement. It demonstrates how legacy giving can directly shape the future of the institution, encouraging other alumni and partners to invest in MLQU’s mission and long-term development.
Ultimately, this initiative affirms MLQU’s commitment to its guiding principle — Pro Patria et Jure — by ensuring that the next generation of Quezonian lawyers are equipped not only with legal knowledge, but with a broader global perspective, a strong sense of purpose, and a deep appreciation for the enduring impact of those who came before them.
The signing ceremony was attended by members of the Espiritu family, MLQU officials, faculty of the School of Law, and members of the academic community, all gathered to witness the formalization of a legacy that bridges the past and the future.
As MLQU continues to strengthen its commitment to academic excellence and global relevance, the Benjamin A. Espiritu, Sr. Endowment Fund for International Law stands as a testament to the enduring power of education, remembrance, and purposeful giving.
