MLQU School of Law Strengthens Bar Readiness Through New Leadership Role and Year-Round Bar Operations Initiative

The Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) School of Law continues to intensify its commitment to Bar readiness and academic excellence through strategic leadership and innovation. In line with this direction, Atty. Paquito N. Ochoa, Jr, Chairman and President of MLQU has recently designated Atty. Charmagne L. Cuevas as Director for Academic Initiatives, Bar Operations, and Marketing of the School of Law.

The creation of this position signals a decisive step toward elevating MLQU’s performance in the Bar Examinations and strengthening the overall academic journey of law students. It reflects the University’s broader thrust to build a more responsive, competitive, and future-oriented School of Law.

A Leader with Experience and an Advocate for Working Students

Atty. Charmagne L. Cuevas brings with her a unique blend of academic background, professional experience, and firsthand understanding of the challenges faced by working law students.

She earned her Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Major in Financial Management from the University of Santo Tomas, and later pursued her Juris Doctor degree at Arellano University, where she graduated as a working student — an experience that shaped her perspective on perseverance, discipline, and academic support systems.

Atty. Cuevas is not new to Bar Operations, having been actively involved in planning, coordination, and support programs designed to assist aspiring lawyers. Her leadership aims to ensure that Bar Operations at MLQU becomes a truly year-round initiative, rather than a seasonal undertaking.

Raising the Tempo: Year-Round Bar Operations

Under her direction, the School of Law will adopt a full-year Bar readiness framework, ensuring that students — whether first-year, mid-level, or graduating — receive consistent guidance and structured support throughout their academic journey.

The enhanced Bar Operations framework will include:

  • Continuous assessment and diagnostics to identify strengths and learning gaps
  • Linked academic interventions, including lectures, simulations, and coaching
  • Bar-focused legal writing and analytical thinking programs
  • Test-taking strategies and mock Bar exams conducted at regular intervals
  • Mentoring from faculty, alumni, and legal practitioners
  • Holistic support initiatives that address mental well-being, time management, and resilience

This year-round approach aims to elevate the preparedness of Quezonian law students and strengthen their confidence and competence as future Bar candidates.

Academic Program Innovation at the School of Law

One of the core responsibilities of the Director for Academic Initiatives is to lead academic program innovation, ensuring that MLQU’s legal education remains responsive to the evolving demands of the legal profession, industry expectations, and national development needs.

Key directions include:

  1. Strengthening the Juris Doctor Program

Enhancing curriculum alignment with Bar competencies and LEB standards, legal research proficiency, and practical skills through moot courts, case simulations, and legal clinics.

  1. Expanding Postgraduate and Continuing Legal Education

Oversight and growth of the School of Law’s postgraduate programs, including:

  • Master of Laws (LL.M.)
  • Refresher Course for Bar candidates
  • Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) programs

These programs are designed to position MLQU as a center for advanced legal learning and professional development.

  1. Integrating Marketing and Visibility Efforts

Strengthening public engagement, alumni involvement, partnerships, and the visibility of MLQU School of Law’s academic offerings, achievements, and advocacies.

A Stronger, More Competitive MLQU School of Law

The appointment of Atty. Charmagne L. Cuevas reinforces MLQU’s commitment to nurturing competent, ethical, and practice-ready law graduates. Her role is vital in driving reforms, accelerating Bar readiness, and ensuring that MLQU’s legal education remains relevant and competitive.

Through proactive leadership, year-round Bar Operations, and innovative academic programming, MLQU continues its mission to build a stronger and more resilient School of Law — one that equips students not only to pass the Bar, but to excel in their future roles as lawyers and public servants.
