As part of its continuing commitment to community engagement and civic empowerment, Manuel L. Quezon University recently conducted an extension activity through its National Service Training Program (NSTP), with first-year Legal Management students leading a Human Rights Seminar for barangay officials and frontliners of Brgy. Vasra, Quezon City.
Held on 26 April 2026 at the Multi-Purpose Hall of Brgy. Vasra, the seminar, titled “Karapatan at Ligtas na Sambayanang Ginigising,” was organized by first-year Legal Management students under the supervision of Engr. Rommel Copuyoc.
Serving as resource speaker was Atty. Krishna Sunico, representative from the Commission on Human Rights and part-time faculty member of the MLQU School of Business, who delivered an informative and practical discussion on human rights and property-related legal processes relevant to local governance and community dispute resolution.
The seminar was attended by 34 members of the Lupon Tagapamayapa and Barangay Public Safety Officers (BPSO) of Brgy. Vasra, together with Kagawad Jonniel Mejia and Barangay Captain Hermenegildo Aviles.
Among the key topics discussed were:
The seminar proved highly relevant and beneficial to the participants, particularly in light of their frontline roles in handling barangay and community concerns. Attendees gained practical understanding of due process requirements in eviction and demolition cases involving informal settlers, proper handling of property rights issues, and legal principles applicable to community dispute management.
A dynamic Question-and-Answer and Legal Consultation Segment followed the lecture, allowing participants to raise actual concerns regarding property rights, eviction procedures, and local dispute situations, which were addressed directly by Atty. Sunico.
The successful conduct of the seminar reflects MLQU’s commitment to producing students who are not only academically prepared but also socially engaged and community-oriented. Through extension initiatives such as this, the University continues to integrate classroom learning with meaningful public service, empowering students to apply their knowledge in ways that create tangible impact in the communities they serve.
This activity likewise demonstrates MLQU’s broader thrust of promoting legal awareness, civic responsibility, and community empowerment through responsive and relevant extension programs.
