Promoting Information Integrity and Academic Responsibility
Manuel L. Quezon University successfully launched its First Library Interdisciplinary Activity Series on February 27, 2026, in partnership with the General Education Department, marking a significant step in strengthening information literacy, academic integrity, and interdisciplinary learning within the university community.
Carrying the theme “Fact or Fake: Integrity of Information,” the first session highlighted the critical importance of responsible information use in an era defined by rapid digital dissemination, artificial intelligence tools, and widespread access to online content. The initiative underscores MLQU’s commitment to equipping students and faculty not only with academic knowledge but also with the discernment and ethical grounding necessary for scholarly and professional excellence.
The first session featured Atty. Keith H. Cipriano, Director of the General Education Program and Head of the Extension Services Office, who delivered an engaging lecture on the Law on Copyright. His discussion provided participants with a clear and practical understanding of intellectual property rights, fair use principles, plagiarism prevention, and the legal responsibilities of students, educators, and researchers in utilizing published and digital materials. The session emphasized that respect for authorship and originality is foundational to academic credibility and professional integrity.
Participants gained valuable insights into how copyright law applies to academic work, research outputs, multimedia materials, and online resources — knowledge that is increasingly essential in today’s knowledge-driven and technology-enabled learning environment. The lecture also encouraged critical thinking in evaluating sources, distinguishing verified information from misinformation, and upholding ethical standards in scholarship.
The activity forms part of the University Library’s expanded academic engagement program, which seeks to position the library not only as a repository of knowledge but also as a dynamic learning hub that supports research skills, interdisciplinary dialogue, and intellectual responsibility. Through this initiative, MLQU reinforces its identity as a mentoring university that cultivates informed, principled, and socially responsible learners.
Additional sessions are expected to follow, each designed to address contemporary issues in information evaluation, research ethics, digital literacy, and responsible knowledge production.
Through programs such as this, MLQU continues to demonstrate its dedication to fostering a scholarly community grounded in truth, critical inquiry, and integrity, values that remain essential in academic life and beyond.
