Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) once again paid tribute to its namesake, President Manuel L. Quezon, in a meaningful commemoration of Quezon Day, coinciding with his 146th birth anniversary on August 19, 2024. The university organized a series of activities to honor the memory and contributions of the Father of the Philippine National Language, whose vision and leadership continue to inspire the institution.
The day began with a solemn flag-raising ceremony held at the university grounds, symbolizing the patriotic spirit that Quezon embodied throughout his life. Following the flag-raising, a wreath was laid at the bust of President Quezon, located prominently on campus, serving as a reminder of his enduring legacy.
Highlighting the day’s events was a talk delivered by Professor Allan Ace W. Aclan of the School of Arts, Sciences and Education (SASE). In his lecture, Professor Aclan delved into the lasting impact of President Quezon’s leadership, particularly his efforts in advocating for social justice, education, and the national language. The talk provided valuable insights, especially for students and faculty, about the enduring relevance of Quezon’s ideals in today’s society.
In partnership with the Quezon City Chapter of the National Red Cross, MLQU also hosted a blood donation drive. The initiative underscored the university’s commitment to community service, reflecting the humanitarian values that President Quezon championed during his lifetime.
Capping off the day’s activities was a well-attended film showing of the movie Quezon’s Game. The film, which chronicles President Quezon’s efforts to save Jewish refugees during World War II, served as a poignant reminder of his compassion and commitment to human rights. Attendees were moved by the story, which highlighted a lesser-known but significant aspect of Quezon’s legacy.
The commemoration of Quezon Day at MLQU was not just a tribute to the past but also a reaffirmation of the university’s dedication to the values that President Manuel L. Quezon stood for — values that continue to guide the institution as it shapes the leaders of tomorrow.
