MLQU Holds First Juris Doctor Conferment Ceremony

The Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) marked a significant milestone in its legal education history as it held its first-ever Juris Doctor Conferment Ceremony on Saturday, March 1, 2025, at 6:00 p.m. at the Oasis Events Place in San Juan City. The event, attended by MLQU officials, members of the legal profession, faculty, alumni, and proud families, signified a transformative moment for MLQU’s School of Law.

Atty. Paquito N. Ochoa, Jr., Chairman and President of MLQU, extended his warmest congratulations through a welcome message delivered on his behalf. He emphasized that this conferment was more than just a ceremonial change in title—it was an affirmation of the evolving landscape of Philippine legal education.

“This marks a historic transformation in Philippine legal education,” Atty. Ochoa stated. “With the implementation of Legal Education Board Memorandum Order No. 19, Series of 2018, our legal system fully recognizes that the study and practice of law must continue to evolve to meet the demands of a dynamic and complex society.” He added that the transition from Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) to Juris Doctor (J.D.) aligns Philippine legal education with global standards, ensuring that MLQU’s graduates remain competitive on the international stage.

The keynote address was delivered by Court of Appeals Justice Carlito B. Calpatura, an esteemed alumnus of MLQU, who fondly reminisced about his formative years from pre-law to law school at MLQU. He reflected on the challenges and triumphs that shaped him and his fellow alumni, highlighting the perseverance and dedication required to excel in the legal profession. Justice Calpatura beamed with pride as he acknowledged that the majority of the conferees, including himself  and his wife, have become successful jurists, government officials, and private practitioners. “This is a testament to the enduring legacy of MLQU’s School of Law in shaping some of the finest legal minds in the country,” he remarked.

A significant part of this conferment was the role played by Batch 1994, which initiated the event to ensure that their fellow graduates received their well-earned recognition under the new nomenclature. Their efforts paved the way for this historic celebration, further strengthening the bond among MLQU alumni and reinforcing the university’s commitment to academic and professional excellence.

Atty. Ochoa, in his message, also expressed deep gratitude to the faculty, deans, and mentors of the MLQU School of Law for their unwavering commitment to legal education. “Your role as lawyers, jurists, and advocates remains crucial in upholding the rule of law, justice, and ethical leadership in our country,” he said. He also acknowledged the families and loved ones of the graduates, recognizing their unwavering support and sacrifices.

As the graduates received their Juris Doctor degrees, the ceremony stood as both a validation of their hard work and a beacon of inspiration for their continued journey in law and justice. MLQU takes pride in its alumni who continue to elevate the legal profession and champion justice in Philippine society.

Congratulations to the MLQU Juris Doctor graduates—may you carry the banner of Manuel L. Quezon University with honor and integrity.
