On April 18, 2022, Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) hosted another insightful session of MLQU GenTalks, featuring Karen De Guzman-Abuel, a multiplatform reporter from ABS-CBN News, who delivered a timely and thought-provoking lecture titled:

“Media at the Edge: Navigating Truth and Trust in the Age of AI”

Ms. De Guzman-Abuel primarily covers crime, disasters, and other major assignments for both television and digital platforms. Currently assigned to the Philippine National Police beat, she has built a strong reputation as a trusted police reporter, handling high-stakes and fast-moving stories where speed, verification, and public trust are critical.

A graduate of University of the Philippines Diliman, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts in Speech Communication cum laude in 2016, she brings both academic rigor and real-world experience to her work in journalism.

Navigating Truth in the Age of AI

In her lecture, Ms. De Guzman-Abuel emphasized the evolving role of journalists in an era shaped by artificial intelligence and digital media. She highlighted the importance of adapting to new technologies while remaining steadfast in the core principles of accuracy, credibility, and accountability.

Engaging Students Through Real-World Application

The session was further enriched by an interactive activity where participants were challenged to distinguish between AI-generated and authentic news content. The exercise also encouraged students to reflect on their responsibility in upholding truth and facts in the information ecosystem.

Strengthening Media Literacy and Responsibility

The GenTalks session underscores MLQU’s continuing commitment to developing critical thinkers, responsible communicators, and digitally aware learners. In an age where information is abundant yet not always reliable, initiatives such as this equip students with the tools and mindset needed to navigate the complexities of modern media.

As the digital landscape continues to evolve, MLQU remains steadfast in its mission to empower students, not only to consume information wisely, but to become advocates of truth, integrity, and responsible storytelling.
