QUEZON CITY — Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) successfully mounted “Doon Po Sa MLQU: Paano gumawa ng short video gamit ang aking cellphone?”, a dynamic three-day workshop held from September 21 to 23, 2026, at the VS Ballroom, Victoria Sports Tower.
Designed to make digital storytelling accessible, engaging, and impactful, the interactive series brought together students, faculty, local representatives from Barangay Commonwealth, and delegate schools to learn the fundamentals of visual production using everyday mobile technology.
The workshop opened with high energy as participants gathered for an intensive series of lectures and interactive discussions led by industry legend Direk Leo Martinez, alongside acclaimed filmmakers Direk Mel Bacani and Direk Ricky Orellana.
The first day focused on key creative principles: translating local community narratives into visual language, understanding shot composition, and structuring compelling short-form content.
“Storytelling is no longer confined to big studios and expensive camera rigs. Through accessible mobile tools, our communities now hold the power to document, express, and share their unique lived experiences.” — Direk Leo Martinez, Veteran Actor and Director
Day 2 challenged attendees to put theory into practice. Participants stepped out into the field for a practical shoot-and-edit session, utilizing smartphone features, mobile editing apps, and quick-turnaround production techniques.
Guided by workshop facilitators, teams collaborated to capture everyday moments and structure them into cohesive short video narratives under tight deadlines.
The series concluded on Day 3 with a celebratory showcase and evaluation session. The initiative saw overwhelming participation, generating over 80 original short film submissions created during the Day 2 production phase.
Out of these entries, 30 shortlisted works were selected for live screening and detailed evaluation by the panel of directors. Direk Leo, Direk Ricky, and Direk Mel provided constructive feedback on narrative clarity, pacing, and visual messaging.
To cap off the gathering, the panel recognized 6 short videos with Special Citations for artistic and technical excellence, while 3 videos were awarded Popular Vote honors based on audience applause and engagement. All participants were awarded digital certificates of completion.
By bridging academic learning, community participation, and digital media literacy, Manuel L. Quezon University continues its commitment to community engagement and creative excellence.
MLQU extends its appreciation to the speakers, Barangay Commonwealth representatives, partner educational institutions, and student organizers whose enthusiasm made this three-day event a success.
