Carlos Fenequito to Lead MLQU Sports Program, Aiming for Competitive Excellence

Manuel L. Quezon University (MLQU) is set to elevate its sports program this year with the appointment of Carlos Fenequito as the head of its sports development. With the goal of expanding its athletic footprint, MLQU is gearing up for greater participation in collegiate sports, starting with its basketball team, the MLQU Stallions, which has already been competing in the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities (NAASCU) and other intercollegiate tournaments. Under Fenequito’s leadership, the MLQU sports agenda promises to reach new heights, not just in basketball but across various competitive sports.

Fenequito brings with him a wealth of experience and a proven track record in sports. He played a key role in the University of Santo Tomas (UST) men’s basketball team during their championship runs in the UAAP from 2007 to 2009. After his playing career, he transitioned to coaching, guiding college athletes during the annual UST Thomasian Goodwill Games while also running Tigers Basketball, a grassroots academy focused on developing young basketball talent. His holistic understanding of sports, both as a player and coach, is expected to infuse a new level of energy and performance into MLQU’s athletic program.

One of the immediate goals under Fenequito’s leadership is strengthening the MLQU Stallions basketball team, which is preparing to compete in the 22nd season of the NAASCU, opening on October 14 at the Cuneta Astrodome. With the Stallions already showing promise, Fenequito aims to build a more cohesive and competitive team that can contend for the title in the coming seasons.

However, MLQU’s athletic ambitions go beyond basketball. The university is expanding its participation in a wide array of sports, including volleyball, cheerleading, athletics, table tennis, badminton, chess, swimming, taekwondo, dance sports, handball, and others. This holistic approach to sports development aims to create well-rounded athletes who can excel both on and off the court.

One of MLQU’s key advantages is its access to the world-class facilities at the Victoria Sports Tower, which includes a complete gymnasium outfitted with the latest equipment. This facility provides the perfect training ground for the Stallions and other student-athletes as they prepare for various competitions. With this support, MLQU is poised to become a formidable presence in collegiate sports.

Beyond building a winning team, Fenequito also aims to foster a culture of discipline, teamwork, and academic balance among MLQU athletes. His vision includes strengthening MLQU’s grassroots sports development, identifying and nurturing young talents who can represent the university in national and international competitions.

As MLQU continues to develop its athletic programs, Fenequito’s appointment signals a new era of sports excellence for the university. With his leadership, coupled with the school’s expanding sports agenda and superior training facilities, MLQU is positioning itself as a rising force in the Philippine collegiate sports scene. This marks the beginning of an exciting chapter for the MLQU Stallions, as they prepare not just for the upcoming NAASCU season but also for a future filled with potential and success in multiple sports disciplines.
