As its contribution to the improvement of our Criminal Justice System and as a source of fully trained and values-oriented young men and women for our police, fire, correctional and security services, as well as criminology educators, the University began to offer the criminology course in 1967 under the School of Arts and Sciences. Because of the increased enrolment, the School of Criminology was established as a separate department in 1976.  The school has maintained a strong faculty of active and retired police, correctional and security officers. All the deans of the school are former ranking law enforcer officials who have had extensive training local and abroad.

Its first dean was Dean Lorenzo A. Sunico, a lawyer-chemist, was a Deputy Director for Technical Services of the NBI. He was followed by Dean Constante U. Tavanlar, also a lawyer, who had been an NBI Head Agent, Superintendent of the NBI Academy, Chief of the NBI Identification Division, and Assistant NAPOLCOM Commissioner. The third dean was Dean Juan D. Magdato, was an NBI Fingerprint Expert and one of the pioneers in police education. Atty. Cleto B. Señoren was the fourth Dean who had  occupied different positions and capacity. Worthwhile to mention some government positions he occupied as former Assistant Secretary in the Department of Justice, Supervising NBI Agent, State Prosecutor, Probation Administrator, Acting Director of Corrections and Acting Chairman of the Board of Pardon and Parole. The incumbent Dean is JESUS B. ARCEO (DSC), Ed.D., Ph.D. is a retired Police Senior Superintendent and has vast experiences in both Military and Police Education and Training. He occupied various positions in the Philippine Constabulary as junior officer and a Commanding Officer. In the PNP, he occupied sensitive and responsible positions such as Manager, Material Management Center, Chief Supply Center, Chief Procurement Officer, CO, Maintenance Unit, Chief of Staff and Deputy Director for Operations of PNP, Logistics Support Service, and Director of Training of LSS. Upon retirement he concentrated in Police education as full professor at the Philippine National Police Academy and National Police College prior to his appointment as Dean.

In  a rare show of achievement, three of the school’s graduates garnered first place in the criminologist licensure examinations given by the Professional Regulation Commission in October 1996, march 1997 and march 1998 respectively and continuously producing Board Topnotchers.

The School of Criminal Justice conducts Criminology Pre-Board Review every July to October and January to April which open to all Criminology Graduate
