In the 1970's, there was a great demand
for technical professionals, particularly abroad. This market force
contributed to the general increase of enrollment in engineering and
architecture courses. This factor triggered a ripple effect even in the
MLQU-School of Engineering and Architecture. The very sizeable
enrollment that time necessitated that the Architecture department
should function separately.
As a result in 1975, Archt. Carlos B.
Banaag, FUAP, who used to head the Architecture Department, was
appointed as the first Dean of the newly formed School of Architecture,
with Archt. Mario S. Valderrama, and Archt. Ma. Victoria O. Chan as Vice
Dean and School Secretary, respectively.
Prior
to the separation of the Architecture Department from the School
of Engineering and Architecture, its architect-faculty members,
aside from Archt. Carlos B. Banaag, included Archt. Cesar V. Canchela, Archt.
Gines F. Rivera, Archt. Augusto
Fernando, Archt. Manuel Mañosa Jr., Archt. Mauro C. Simpliciano, Archt. Humberto
C. Solis who are considered the founders of the said department. Later, with the
exception of Archt. Carlos B. Banaag, the first batch of architectural
educators had to leave teaching due to the greater demands of
professional practice. Gradually, they were supplanted by such
architects as Archt. Apolinario Apilado Jr., Arch. Angel L. Bautista, Archt. Jose
V. Buenaventura, Archt. Ma. Victoria O. Chan, Archt. Rufino S. Cruz,
Archt. Vivencio S. Cruz Jr.,
Archt. Romeo R. Fojas, Archt. Amado S. Javier, Archt. Wilfredo M. Manalo,
Archt. Francisco P. Mapalo Jr.,
Archt. Melamo R. Raguepo, Archt. Ruperto R. Trinidad and Archt. Mario
S. Valderrama.
At
that time that the School of Architecture acquired its independent
status, some of this second wave of architect-teachers still
stayed on while others were eventually drawn exclusively into
professional practice. Meanwhile, others joined the teaching
force. These architect-teachers included Archt. Victor A. Cabrera, Archt. Zenaida
V. Dacanay, Archt. Rudy O. Ferrer, Archt. Danilo C. Halili, Archt. Bernardo R. Laurena,
Archt. Ramon
R. Lopez, Archt. Edgar B. Mitu, Archt. Domingo C. Salonga, Archt. R. Reynaldo Solero,
Archt. Ramon P. Tanglao, and Archt. Bayani C.
Tadina. Of this last group, many have also
been lured by the comparatively greater remuneratory rewards of
professional practice.
Before
the integration of common classes under the School of Arts and
Sciences took effect, the architecture department used to have
faculty members from other departments who taught language
subjects, mathematics, physics, and structural design. Now, in
the School of Architecture, structural design and related
engineering science subjects are handled specifically by such
structural Engineers as Engr. Rolando G. dela Peña, Engr. Pedro B. Mariñas and
Engr. Gliceria M. Perez.
When
Dean Carlos B. Banaag retired in June 1996. Arch. Mario S. Valderrama,
who previously served as Vice Dean, was appointed as Dean Banaag's
successor, while Arch. Ramon R. Lopez, was appointed as Vice Dean. Other
architect-teachers were added to the teaching force. These are Archt. Allen R.
Buenaventura, Archt. Annie C. Pugeda, Archt. Edna Avenido-Lim and for a while
Archt. Francisco C. Mapalo III. With the demise of Archt. Lopez in 2001, Archt.
Rudy O. Ferrer was appointed as his successor.
On June 2008, upon the retirement of
Dean Valderrama, Archt. Rudy O. Ferrer was appointed as the new Dean of
the School of Architecture.
